Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases of The Chinese University of Hong Kong is now conducting a study on applying augmented reality (AR) technology for assisting the performance of HIV self-tests.
Study subjects are men who have sex with men aged 18 years or above who are smartphone users. Should you consent to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an anonymous self-administered online questionnaire which takes about 10-20 minutes through an online system, registration to which requires a valid email address. Your social network, utilisation of HIV testing services and related behaviours would be enquired. Upon completion of the questionnaire, you could request for an HIV antibody self-test kit. The computerised system would then randomly allocate you into either AR or control group. Whichever group you are allocated, you would receive a self-test kit with a written guide and be asked to upload the test result after completion and to fill out a survey regarding usability of the self-test. Participants in the AR group would be invited to use the smartphone to access the Augmented Reality page in this system and follow the instructions therein to perform the self-test. For delivery and contact purposes, you will be asked to provide a contact number and a postal address. These will be destroyed upon study completion. You would not be asked to pay for the delivery. An incentive of HK$20 would be given after completion of all procedures. You could leave your contact information so that we could contact you for delivering the incentives by 31 March 2023.
This is an anonymous study. Study results will be statistically presented without disclosure of personal level information. If you are tested positive, referral would be made to specialists in the public service. Participation is entirely voluntary and will not lead to any foreseeable psychological, physiological, social, legal or commercial risks or benefits, apart from the minimal pain and/or discomfort associated with self-sampling and testing, as well as the anxiety experienced by participants who may happen to have tested positive. Please be advised however that sensitive questions relating to sexual behaviour are included in the questionnaire and data collected would be used for parametrisation in mathematical modelling.
We sincerely invite you to join the study, the participation of which is however entirely voluntary. You can quit this study whenever you wish. Your access to clinical services would not be affected if you refuse to join the study, or request to withdraw after joining. All research data would only be accessible to researchers and their staff. Results of the study would only be used for global analysis without referral to individual patient. Individual’s information would be treated in strictest confidence. Research data would be stored for no more than five years. In the event that you withdraw from the study, questionnaire data would be destroyed, and that these would not be recorded or included in the subsequent analyses. Should you have any further enquiry about this study, please contact Dr Tsz Ho Kwan at 2252 8862 or thkwan@cuhk.edu.hk. The Joint Chinese University of Hong Kong – New Territories East Cluster (CUHK-NTEC) Clinical Research Ethics Committee is authorized to access the subjects' records related to the study for ethics review purpose. For enquiry regarding Clinical Research Ethics, please contact Joint CUHK-NTEC Clinical Research Ethics Committee at crec@cuhk.edu.hk and phone at 3505 3935.
